Day One is Done

74.8 miles and seven and a half hours after leaving Kings Conference Centre in Bujumbura, we arrived in Nyanza-Lac. It's our longest mileage day and likely to be the hottest but the compensation has been a pretty flat route along the edge of Lake Tanganyika. It has been a good introduction to the ride and has enabled us to settle in the routines such as making sure we're all eating and drinking enough in a climate that's very different from home for many of us.

At the last minute, Simon Guillebaud decided to start the ride and to see how he got on. Whilst tired, he made it all the way and is with us in Nyanza-Lac (that's him centre front in the first photo). He's just going to take it a day at a time but it's amazing that he's made it this far given that he's been bed-riddenmuch of the last six weeks.

One of our stops along the way was at the memorial stone at the place where supposedly Stanley met Livingstone with those famous words "Dr Livingstone, I presume".

The scenery along the route was spectacular; this really is a beautiful country. I couldn't help noticing some pretty big hills, though!

The second photo is taken from our hotel in Nyanza-Lac and the land in the distance is Tanzania as we are very close to the border here.

I'm trying not to think about Day Two; I'll leave that for the morning.

Thanks again for all your support.

Paul
